Title: Shakiest playoff team?
Post by: jcompton-Orlando on April 28, 2010, 05:19:16 PM
Is it just me, or do none of the playoff teams seem especially dominant?

Sacramento: Still the best team in the league and my pick for champions, but their last three weeks have been shaky: they got smoked by the Riders, then had trouble with Orlando, and only barely got past the Knights at home.

Orlando: Compton teams don't win playoff games. Their turnover ratio is vile. Next.

San Antonio: Yes, the Surge blowout was great, but then they went on the road for two games, needing overtime to deal with the Machine, and then mailing it in against the Rhein Fire. Will a third week on the road be too much?

Mexico: Played "I got it/You take it" with the Skyhawks down the stretch. Solid victory over Birmingham, but a 7-7 team has never won a playoff game.

Berlin: Played tough down the stretch but two of their losses were to sub-.500 teams. Will they take being the top seed too lightly?

Scotland: Have quietly gone about their business this year and points are at a premium against them. They take a three-game winning streak into the playoffs, but see Frankfurt's key strength...

Frankfurt: Four OT games was the most in the league this year. True, all victories, but it shows how narrow the margins are. Then again, the Galaxy have played so well on the road this year that perhaps being the #3 seed is a blessing.

Paris: Can Ryan Dinwiddie continue to look like the second coming of Stoney Case? Or might someone remind him that he is Ryan Dinwiddie? Paris went 3-4 in the second half of the season and needed 75 minutes to punch its playoff ticket.

Yeah good point, until the huge blowout by the Riders the Surge were obviously clearly the best most dominant team in the league.

Bit in arms this year.  But same for last year, no offence to Berlin but i didnt have them down as FWL champs last year.  Either way theres been some great turnarounds this year from Sacramento (constant 6-8 style team), Orlando (2-12 last year !) and Paris.

And you can explain that away in part in Week 12 and 13 with "Oh, well, Chapman didn't play the whole game" but he played the whole game against the Knights and if the Knights had any pass protection going, they would have won that game.

You make a good point about the Surge's season coming from seeming nowhere, though--I didn't realize it's actually been slightly longer since the Surge were in the playoffs, and since they hosted a playoff game, compared to the Thunder. The Surge just haven't been quite as hapless in the intervening years, but the drought is very similar.

Here's an interesting stat I hadn't noticed until just now:

In the EFC, three of the four playoff teams are returning from last year (Berlin, Frankfurt, Scotland) and Berlin and Frankfurt even have the same seeding.

In the AFC, all four of the playoff teams finished out of the money last year.
