Title: Word gets to double digits Post by: Paul-London on May 28, 2008, 04:37:35 AM With two sacks against Austria this week, DE Mark Word a 13 year veteran has double digit sacks again and has 10 for the season.
http://www.fwl.org.uk/alltime.htm#mword Word has had an amazing career and is the league leader in sacks ( http://www.fwl.org.uk/career.htm#T9) by a wide margin. He has 162 sacks, his nearest rival Michael Josiah has 118 sacks in 9 seasons (with two games left to go). If Word retired this year, Josiah would have to average 11 sacks over the next 4 seasons to tie Word. By then Josiah would have completed 13 seasons and probably would be looking at retirement. Its possible that Josiah could catch Word but he would have to be very productive over the next few years to have any chance of catching him. Mark Word has 162 sacks in his 13 year career, he was originally drafted by Sacramento in the first round and had 5 straight 10+ sack years to open his career until a disappointing 8 in 2008. He has had one other non-10 sack season with 9 but the last few years he has been very productive despite his advancing years. Word this season has switched between DE1 and DE2 but has formed a great partnership with speedy young DE Eric Powell as both players have 10 sacks this year. Word came over to London when the Sacramento GM moved to the Monarchs and brought a handful of vets with him. Word is undecided on coming back next year but may retire at the top after an amazing career. 162 sacks (2 games still to go this year) in 13 seasons is incredible. |
