Title: A look back at Round 1 of the End of Season 12 draft
Post by: Paul-London on March 28, 2007, 09:46:11 AM
1 - Mexico CB Hank Poteat

Was a surprise to be the top pick but Poteat has started from day one and has over 340 tackles in his 4 year FWL career so far.  Currently the starting safety for Mexico and the Aztecs are 2-0 with a great young defense with Poteat being part of that.

2 - Paris DE Chris DeMarre

DE2 for Paris who has started for most of his FWL career, has 2 sacks in 2 games this year and has 118 tackles and 25 sacks for his career including 5 last year.  Good starter playing on a terrible defense.

3 - Raleigh-Durham QB Travis Brown

On a  poor Skyhawks team Brown started for his rookie and 2nd season throwing for over 3000 yards each year and had 18 td's in his last starting season.  However on a poor team Brown was the scapegoat and was a backup when top pick Aaron Rodgers arrived.  Brown held a clipboard for a few years until finally being traded to Barcelona this year.  Only a matter of time till he starts with the Dragons.

4 - Scotland WR Herb Haygood

Considering how high he was drafted Haygood hasnt lived up to the billing, has just 69 catches and 7 td's for his career, had 31 catches last year but did pick up an FWL Bowl ring with Scotland.  So far this year has 8 catches for only 59 yards (7.3 avg) but did start in Week 2 and caught 7 passes.  Currently the WR1 for Scotland for the first time passing Ruvell Martin but needs to make bigger plays.

5 - Ohio WR Christopher Liess

Had just 12 passes last year and has just 46 for his career.  Liess does have a lot of talent but so far is going nowhere with Ohio and is a WR4.  Liess is hoping for a trade to another team as so far this young WR has done nothing.  Has talent but needs to start.

6 - London DE Randy Garner

Didnt do much in London and then traded to Amsterdam where he played as a backup.  Started last year and had 23 tackles and 7 sacks, this year is off to a brilliant start with 5 sacks in two games (2nd in the league).  Finally living up to his billing in Amsterdam.

7 - Austria CB Earthwind Moreland

Having a great career in Austria, 268 tackles, 2 sacks and an interception and won an FWL Bowl ring in Austrias championship winning Season 15 team.  Despite his low strength he is the S2 but is more suited to a CB role.  Talented player.

8 - Birmingham S Charles Drake

Has 192 tackles, 2 sacks and 3 ints in his Birmingham career.  Currently the S2 for the Fire and a very talented young player.

9 - Orlando CB James Thornton

229 tackles and 3 ints in his Thunder career for Thornton.  The teams best all round CB and a talented starter.

10 - Scotland HB Sandino Octobre

Very surprising high pick, Octobre was predicted to go in Rounds 4-5.  Had some early starts in his career and was dire with 25 carries for 29 yards in his rookie year !  Had over 200 yards rushing and a long td run in Season 15 and last year had another 200 yards rushing as the main backup to Mike Malan.  Only 485 yards in his career, not great for a 1st round back but Octobre has turned into a great all round back, didnt use to have great speed now looks great on paper and its only a question of time till he takes over from veteran Malan.

11 - New York WR James Adkisson

Total flop in New York and hardly played, was traded to London last year and had 8 catches and this year was traded to Sacramento where he has no catches.  Total career total - 8 catches !  Has talent but needs to see some action, total bust for New York though.

12 - Berlin QB Nate Hybl

Looked very poor when he first started but didnt have any talent around him to help him.  First full season starting last year with the retirement of Pat Barnes and was poor with 7 td's and 7 ints and lost his starting job later in the year.  However has the starting job back and in two games this year has looked very good.  Looks to have turned the corner after several years as a backup.

13 - Rhein DE Clenton Ballard

Excellent career so far with 157 tackles and 42 sacks including 2 in two games this year.  Had 8 sacks this year, hasnt got great SP but has brilliant AG and ST, would be Rheins best DT but is playing slightly out of place as a DE.

14 - Sacramento DT Jeff Haguza

Talented player who has 94 tackles and 27 sacks in his career.  Had some good season with Sacramento but was surprisingly traded to Ohio this year where he is starting.  Had 6 sacks last year for the Surge.

15 - Frankfurt FB Jeff Chaney

More suited to a HB, Chaney spent two years inactive with Frankfurt and decided to retire.  Total waste of a pick because of Chaneys short two years in the league.

16 - San Antonio T Scott Huff

Backup for a few years with the Riders before coming over to London last year.  Has started every game with the Monarchs at G last year but was a backup this year after moving to tackle.  Has reclaimed his starting job back, great talent for London and should get even better.

17 - Amsterdam DT Aubrayo Franklin

Strange career.  Had 12 tackles and 4 sacks as a rookie but then promptly retired from the FWL.  Amsterdam were very upset with the loss of Franklin who only played one year.

18 - Mexico S Ralph Parent

Had over 300 tackles in his Mexico career and has started practically every game since being drafted.  Along with top pick Hank Poteat, Parent is a great pick and who is currently playing at CB1.  Mexico have a great young defense and this years draft was one reason why.

When he retired Chaney looked like that:

I  FB3    25  Chaney, Jeff             OK     1     89 86 81 82 88 84 85 74

He had all time great Joe Aska in front of him but I had great plans to make him and
Hicks the 1-2 punch of my running game. (He was 1 or2 good TCs away from beeing
as superstar startrer)

His retirement not only hit me hard, but also forced me to spent another 1st round pick
to trade for Jonas Lewis, a great player indeed, butI rather would have kept Chaney.

As far as I can remember this was the worst retirement I ever had.

But however In think its unfair to call it a wasted pick, because I did nothing wrong with
that pick, I selected the best RB available and he would have been my starter since 2-3 years
by now. You cannot say I made a bad pick, because he later retired too early :-)
