Title: News Around the League
Post by: Paul-London on April 10, 2007, 06:46:16 AM
- Monarchs DE Mark Word is having a great comeback at age 33.  Word in his 11th season is 3rd in the league with 6 sacks and has at least 1 sack in every game this year.  Word is already the leagues all time sack leader and a double digit sack year this season may push him past 140 sacks in his career which seems a figure that cant ever be passed.

- New Glory GM Gary Schofield Jnr has made a big impact on his team, his d-line is retooled and revamped and is having a great year.  One player who is stunning everyone this year is DE Derrick Crawford. Crawford is on pace to smash the all time sack record in a season as he has an amazing 10 sacks in 4 games this year !  Hes on pace for around 35 !

- A year after winning the FWL Bowl Claymores GM Ronnie Munro is scratching his head at the demise of his team particularly the defense.  The defense has looked flat all year and is the worst in the league which is stunning after top rank last year.  How could a defense fall from 1st one season to 18th the next ?  Its a huge puzzle and so far there looks like no solution.

- Machine QB Danny Wuerrfel is currently in his 12th year but hes having one of his best seasons ever, hes thrown 7 td's and 0 ints and has played brilliantly despite not much help from his rushing attack.

- Another Machine player who was promoted to the top start last week because of injury WR Carlos Rosado made the most of his promotion.  He caught an incredible 12 passes for 215 yards and 2 td's in one of the best performances ever by a Machine WR.  Harwood has moved Rosado back to his usual WR4 position but look for that to change.

- Offensive line problems - Sacramento just cant run the ball.  HB BJ Askew must be frustrated as anything running behind that Surge o-line as it badly needs an upgrade or a shuffle.

- Look for Orlando to start HB MIke Green at some point this year, Green is aging but still has good speed and strength which is essential behind that Thunder o-line to break tackles.  Young HB Dee Brown looks good on paper but is way too small and has been compared to Berlins Avon Cobourne, a good little back but one who just cant pound it out play after play.

- Monarchs on fire.  London are on a roll this year, their defense is now the top unit in the league, QB Drew Henson the top QB and even HB Joe Hall is getting the yards on the ground.  Several veterans are really contributing this year including DE Mark Word, LB Kinnon Tatum and LB Brian Rodgers.  The Monarchs also have a lot of young players on the team and LB John Leake is having a great year.  London again dont have many draft picks this year but the future looks good for London

- Raleigh may be a team struggling but they now have FOUR first round picks.  Look for Raleigh to get a stud HB by trading up in the draft as they have a huge weakness in that area.  Also look for another DE to be drafted, after trading their best d-line players to Austria their line does appear to be very weak.

- Rhein HB Tony Hollings has struggled in his two starts this year but Hollings does show some talent and is improving week after week.  Hollings only has 90 yards in two games but has 2 td's and at times shows some great plays. If Rhein can strengthen their o-line then Hollings could have a great year next year

- How bad can one defense be ?  Orlandos defense has 8 sacks in 4 games, their offensive line have allowed 32 in 4 games !  The huge 28 difference is a record in the FWL.  The astonishing fact is that veteran DE David Nugent has 5 of the 8 sacks.  Nick Burley a talented player has 0 sacks and the DT's have just 1 sack between them !

- Poor Glory HB Keith Belton.  Belton a young player who moved up to HB2 got a lot of action last week when Payton was injured against Raleigh.  Late in the game Belton fumbled the ball, Ohio recovered but it was a 7 yard loss which led to a 48 yard FG a play later not a 41 yarder on the final play.  The kick was missed, Ohio lost the game and Belton is now inactive !

- One of the best all round backs this year who is very underrated is Mexico HB Eric McCoo.  This week McCoo rushed for 99 yards but also caught a career high 15 passes for 150 yards for 249 combined yards !

- Is this the same Frankfurt GM who seems to cut/bench/trade veterans as soon as they reach their 7th year ?  This week Frankfurt signed former Monarch/Skyhawk WR Latef Frim and instantly started him at WR2.  Frim has a history of catching everything thrown at him, the small gangly WR doesnt look great on paper but whenever he plays in the FWL he comes up with receptions and this week despite 4 days of practice Frim caught 7 passes for 72 yards and was excellent.  Great move so far by Frankfurt as Frim could turn out to be a WR2 steal.

- Who will start at HB this week for Scotland ?  Despite a tough loss HB Sandino Octobre played well with 64 yards rushing (6.4 avg) and 10 passes for a further 56 yards.  Mike Malan played well at FB but the whole team suffered against a pumped up Monarchs team.

- When will Paris get some luck ?  Theyve made a great trade this year for FB James Lynch and Robert Edwards seemed to be playing much better, he had a 60 yard sprint this week after a 100+ game last week but then was injured and will be out for well over a month.  Paris dont seem to have any decent backups so who will start next week is anyones guess.
