Offseason

After reading Paul's mail today, I have the feeling that the offseason is a bit rushed.
I, for one, will be away during nearly all of the trading period and will only have sporadic email access. Maybe we could extend the trading period by a week, or so? Any comments?

I myself am also almost not online during that time, but to be honest, when was the
last time you made a trade before retirements ?

I tried often and cannot remember to have made any significant trades.
Most offers will be about veterans that are maybe about to retire anyway.

The reason Paul want to rush a bit, is to keep everything in the flow and interesting.
I think also that more trading will happen before the draft then before retirements.
At least one GM is waiting for exactly that to trade with me ;-)

I get your point Volker but like i say there are hardly any trades before retirements because most people want to see who goes and who stays etc.  I want a good period of trading before the draft as once the draftees are announced and retirements done then historically you get a lot of trading.

I dont want to rush the league too much but on the other hand i think we have too many quiet weeks in between seasons where activity is quite low.  This year we'll have a lot of time after retirements and the draft.  Then after the draft a week or so before we start the season for trades etc

One problem i've had in the past is too long a delay between seasons

If you ask me why have a trading period before retirements, why not just run the retirements right after the FWL bowl?

because you could at least try to sell some veterans before retiring
or
you want to sign a free agent and to make a place on your roster you want to
trade a player away
or
you want be the first to go after a certain player

I am not such a big risk taker

But be fair how many trades have been made the last years in the period between FWL Bowl and retirements. Most GM's wait till after the draftees are available.

But as I said: it was just if you ask me

I must admit i traded for S Tim James in one offseason as i liked the way he made 90+ tackles year in year out, i traded for him and then 'ahem' he retired a week later ! Not my best trade in the world

I concede that not much trading happens before retirement, although I can vaguely remember at least one conditional trade I did before retirement (i.e. along the lines "I get a higher draft pick from you if the player retires.").

So how about extending the period between retirements and draft a bit? Simply putting the retirements forward would not really solve the problem of people being away/not online over Christmas/New Year.

As you might have guessed already, I have a particular concern with the subject this season
since I will try to trade at least one player.  (It's everyones guess now who that is....)
