Kicking from a tee the ball is higher up so the kick goes further - like a kickoff will go from the 30 to the goalline normally (70 yards), so any fair catch in the opposition half at the end of the period would be worthwhile.

And with the opposition 10 yards away the trajectory of the ball can be lower initially. This is what limits Field Goal range now, that the kick has to get over the defensive players. In fact one of those little things thats worth watching, is that kickers are now often 8 yards behind the Line of Scrimmage rather than 7 to give the ball more time to get up and over.

I'm surprised that its not in the Madden Games as John Madden has known about it and included the scenario in one of his books.

Not exactly an odd playcalling, but a very crazy situation:

Rhein's ball on Frankfurt's 26 yard line. Second and 10 to go. :15 left in
the fourth quarter. The score is Frankfurt 9, Rhein 7.

Rhein's K1 #6 Jaret Holmes attempts a 43 yard field goal. The kick is
blocked by Frankfurt's DE1 #68 Andre Arnold. The ball is recovered by
Holmes. Holmes runs for a loss of just over 7 yards. Holmes is tackled by
LB4 #71 Antonio Rodriguez. Third and just over 17 to go. That was FGPAT
(2217) against Pass long (2215).

Rhein's ball on Frankfurt's 33 yard line. Third and just over 17 to go. :09
left in the fourth quarter. The score is Frankfurt 9, Rhein 7.

The pass from Rhein's QB1 #3 Dani Pegenaute was incomplete. Fourth and just
over 17 to go. That was Kill Clock (2371) against Frankfurt's Pass long
(2369).

Rhein's ball on Frankfurt's 33 yard line. Fourth and just over 17 to go.
:01 left in the fourth quarter. The score is Frankfurt 9, Rhein 7.

Rhein's K1 #6 Jaret Holmes attempts a 50 yard field goal. The kick is
short. That was FGPAT (2497) against Frankfurt's FGPAT (2495).

This is perfect example, why you sometimes do not wait untill 4th down to kick.
However I have never seen this in the game before. Also very crazy that
my defense still had the pass defense on the field while Rhein was lining up
for the game winning FG. But maybe it was better that way, as instead of a pass rush
it became a blocked kick Smiley

However, I was very fortunate to win that game !

I actually am surprised the computer did those plays, i think those plays were sensible.

Just like in the NFL a team often goes for a FG late in a game on 2nd or 3rd down in case of a bad snap.  In this case it nearly worked, the kick was blocked, the Fire recovered then quickly threw an incompletion to stop the clock.

They had another chance and the kick was missed

As for the earlier FG again i think that was sensible by Frankfurt.  You also see that in the NFL a fair bit, in case of a fake the other team put some defenders back in case of a pass.

Didnt realise Rhein had two missed FG's late in the game though, thought it was just the final one at the end.  Unlucky win for Rhein but i think the playcalling was correct
